What is the Autumn color family?

Autumn is the warmest, most grounded of the four color families in seasonal color analysis. Its palette is a forest in October: turning leaves, spice markets, old leather and deep moss. People in the Autumn family look best in colors that are:

  • Warm, built on gold and yellow rather than blue: camel, rust and olive instead of grey, fuchsia and icy blue.
  • Earthy and blended, with a little brown or grey in them. Autumn colors look natural, like pigments from clay, spice and wood.
  • Medium to deep, with real depth. Autumns can carry chocolate, forest green and maroon that would overpower a Spring or Summer.

In the 12-season system, Autumn splits into three types depending on whether softness, warmth or depth leads. Gold flatters all three, and so does almost anything you would find in a forest in October.

The three Autumn types: Soft, Warm and Deep

All Autumns are warm and earthy. The difference is which quality comes first.

  • Soft Autumn

    Soft first, then warm

The gentlest Autumn, with muted, gently warm colors and low contrast. It has its own in-depth guide: the soft autumn color palette, with all 20 colors.

Often: Dark blonde to medium brown hair, hazel or soft green eyes, beige or soft olive skin, low contrast.

  • Warm Autumn

    Warm first, then rich

The most golden Autumn. Colors are spicy and saturated: rust, burnt orange, ochre, bronze and olive. Cool, icy colors make you look washed out.

Often: Golden brown, auburn or copper hair, warm brown, amber or green eyes, golden or peachy skin, often with freckles.

  • Deep Autumn

    Deep first, then warm

The darkest Autumn. Colors are dramatic but still warm: chocolate, maroon, mahogany, forest greens and deep teal. Light pastels make you look faded.

Often: Dark brown to black-brown hair, dark brown eyes, and skin of any depth with a warm or olive undertone.

Each type borders another family: Soft Autumn sits next to Soft Summer, Warm Autumn next to Warm Spring and Deep Autumn next to Deep Winter. If you sit near one of those edges, a photo color analysis makes the call.

Colors that suit Autumns, and colors to avoid

These rules hold for all three Autumn types, with small differences noted.

What works

  • Neutrals: cream, camel, khaki, olive, chocolate and warm brown instead of black and grey. Soft Autumns stay lighter; Deep Autumns go darker.
  • Metals: yellow gold, antique gold, bronze, brass and copper, ideally brushed or hammered rather than mirror-bright.
  • Makeup: terracotta, brick, warm nude or brown-red lips; peach or bronze blush; bronze, olive, copper or brown eye shadow.
  • Hair: golden brown, auburn, copper, chestnut and caramel; avoid ash tones, platinum and blue-black.

What to avoid

  • Black #000000Too stark for most Autumns. Use chocolate or dark olive.
  • Optic white #FFFFFFBright and cool next to warm skin. Use cream or antique white.
  • Fuchsia #FF00FFCool and electric. Use rust or a warm brick red.
  • Alice blue #F0F8FFIcy pastels drain Autumn warmth. Use dark cyan or steel teal.
  • Silver #C0C0C0Cool grey looks flat on you. Use camel or bronze.
  • Lavender #E6E6FACool and pale. Use old rose or mauve taupe.

Autumn color palette FAQ

What colors are in the autumn color palette?

Warm, earthy colors of medium to deep depth: camel, rust, burnt orange, ochre, mustard-golds, olive and forest greens, teal, chocolate and maroon, with cream and warm browns as neutrals.

How do I know if I'm an Autumn?

Autumns usually have a warm or olive undertone, golden, auburn or warm brown hair and eyes with gold or green in them. Gold jewelry suits you better than silver, and earthy colors look natural on you. A photo analysis can tell you which Autumn you are.

What is the difference between Warm Autumn and Deep Autumn?

Warm Autumn is led by warmth: golden, spicy medium-depth colors like rust and ochre. Deep Autumn is led by depth: dark, rich colors like chocolate, maroon and forest green, with higher contrast.

What is the difference between Autumn and Spring?

Both are warm. Spring is clear and bright, with coral, turquoise and golden yellow. Autumn is earthier and deeper, with rust, olive, camel and chocolate.

Can Autumns wear black?

Black is usually too stark, especially for Soft and Warm Autumn. Chocolate, dark olive and dark slate gray give the same depth more naturally. Deep Autumns handle black best, ideally away from the face.

Is gold or silver better for Autumns?

Gold. Yellow gold, antique gold, bronze, brass and copper all suit Autumns. Bright silver tends to look cold against warm skin.

Can I find out which Autumn I am for free?

Yes. Upload a selfie to our free seasonal color analysis. It needs no email or sign-up and shows your season, including whether you are a Soft, Warm or Deep Autumn, with a basic palette.

Are these hex codes exact?
