What is the Spring color family?

Spring is one of the four color families in seasonal color analysis. Its palette looks like a garden in April: warm, sunlit and clean, with no grey or dust in the colors. People in the Spring family look best in shades that are:

  • Warm or warm-leaning, built on yellow rather than blue: think peach, coral and golden green.
  • Clear, pure and bright rather than muted. Springs light up in color that looks freshly painted.
  • Light to medium, rarely very dark. Even Spring's deepest neutrals, like navy and golden brown, stay lively.

In the 12-season system, Spring splits into three types depending on which of these qualities is strongest. If your coloring is warm but soft and hazy rather than clear, you may be an Autumn instead; compare with the soft autumn color palette.

The three Spring types: Light, Warm and Bright

All three share Spring's warmth and clarity. What sets them apart is the quality that dominates.

  • Light Spring

    Light first, then warm

The most delicate Spring. Colors are pale and sunny, like a pastel with warmth in it. Heavy or dark shades overwhelm you quickly.

Often: Light golden or strawberry blonde hair, blue, green or light hazel eyes, ivory or peachy skin, low to medium contrast.

  • Warm Spring

    Warm first, then clear

The most golden Spring. Colors are rich, sunny and saturated, with yellow in every shade. Cool, icy colors look harsh on you.

Often: Golden, honey or strawberry hair, warm green, golden brown or topaz eyes, golden or peachy skin that tans easily.

  • Bright Spring

    Clear first, then warm

The most vivid Spring. Colors are saturated and high-energy, closer to neutral in temperature. Soft, dusty shades make you look dull.

Often: Dark brown or golden brown hair, clear bright eyes (sparkling blue, green or warm brown), and noticeable contrast between hair and skin.

Each type also borders a neighbor from another family: Light Spring sits next to Light Summer, Warm Spring next to Warm Autumn and Bright Spring next to Bright Winter. A photo color analysis helps when you sit near one of those edges.

Colors that suit Springs, and colors to avoid

These rules apply to all three Spring types, with small shifts noted.

What works

  • Neutrals: ivory, camel, warm beige, golden brown and navy instead of black and grey. Light Springs keep to the lightest of these.
  • Metals: polished yellow gold, rose gold and brass. Bright Springs can also wear shiny silver.
  • Makeup: peach or coral blush, warm pink, coral or clear red lips, golden-brown or bronze eye shadow.
  • Hair: golden blonde, honey, strawberry blonde, caramel and warm light brown; avoid ash tones and blue-black.

What to avoid

  • Black #000000Too heavy; it flattens Spring's brightness. Use navy or golden brown.
  • Medium grey #808080Flat and cool next to warm skin. Use camel or wheat.
  • Burgundy #800020Dark and cool. Use tomato red or coral.
  • Old lavender #796878Dusty and cool. Use light salmon or apricot.
  • Dark olive green #556B2FMuddy and dark, an Autumn color. Use yellow-green or pistachio.
  • Coffee brown #6F4E37Heavy brown dulls your coloring. Use golden brown or fawn.

Spring color palette FAQ

What colors are in the spring color palette?

Warm, clear colors of light to medium depth: ivory, peach, coral, tangerine, golden yellow, warm greens, turquoise and warm blues, with camel, golden brown and navy as neutrals.

How do I know if I'm a Spring?

Springs usually have a warm or warm-neutral undertone and clear, bright eyes, and look best in fresh colors rather than dusty or very dark ones. Gold tends to suit you better than silver. A photo analysis can confirm which Spring you are.

What is the difference between Light Spring and Bright Spring?

Light Spring is defined by lightness: pale, sunny tints and low contrast. Bright Spring is defined by clarity: vivid, saturated colors and higher contrast, often with darker hair.

Is Warm Spring the same as Warm Autumn?

No. Both are warm, but Warm Spring is clear and bright, while Warm Autumn is richer and more muted. Turquoise and coral suit Warm Spring; rust and olive suit Warm Autumn.

Can Springs wear black?

Black usually looks too heavy, especially for Light Spring. Navy and golden brown give depth without the harshness. Bright Spring handles black best, ideally mixed with a bright color.

What white should Springs wear?

Ivory or warm cream for Light and Warm Spring. Bright Spring can wear a clean, slightly warm white.

Can I find out which Spring I am for free?

Yes. Upload a selfie to our free seasonal color analysis. It needs no email or sign-up and shows your season, including whether you are a Light, Warm or Bright Spring, with a basic palette.
